Cosmetic surgery is a common procedure with many positive outcomes for patients. However, it can also lead to serious complications. The risks are not always fully disclosed to patients which can create a lot of stress for them. There are inherent risks to surgery as it is an invasive procedure. Some of these risks are higher than others, however.
Vicarious experience
Vicarious trauma may occur when someone is affected by traumatic experiences. The experience can lead you to Posttraumatic Stress disorder. Professional help can help. Individuals may also talk about their experiences with loved ones and friends. Even though it is difficult to talk about, loved ones should not be taken personally by the reactions. They should maintain their daily routines, and contact family and friends.
Self-rated attractiveness
A recent study looked at the relationships between self-rated psychological well-being and physical attractiveness among adolescents. Participants were asked to rate their own physical attractiveness and self-reported levels of suicidal ideation and self-harm. Results showed that male adolescents were more attractive than female peers. In girls, however, self-rated attractiveness was negatively associated with internalized distress. These associations reached statistical significance for girls only, and were not related to suicide ideation or self-harmed behaviors.
Religiousness
New research has shown that religion can have an impact on people's decision whether or not they want to consider cosmetic surgery. Specifically, individuals who are more religious were less likely to have cosmetic surgery than nonreligious individuals. More research is needed to establish the relationship between religion and cosmetic surgery risk.
Income from the Household
The study found that there is a correlation between household incomes and the risk of cosmetic surgery. The findings suggest that people with higher household incomes are more likely undergo cosmetic surgery than those on lower incomes. The researchers used the Dutch Central Bureau of Statistics' measure of gross household income to assess SES. It is a widely accepted method of assessing SES and has been shown to reflect health disparities among different socioeconomic groups.
Liquid silicone facial injections
However, liquid silicone injections have become a very popular procedure for cosmetic surgery. There are also risks involved. Some patients may experience temporary bruising and swelling. Some patients may experience serious complications, such as inflammatory reactions. Additionally, liquid silicone injections could migrate into other parts of your body and cause permanent damage. Extreme cases of treatment can lead to heart attacks.
Infections
Infections after cosmetic surgery are a serious risk for patients. Although they are uncommon, infections can still occur even if antibacterial agents have been used. There are many microorganisms that can cause infections. They are most commonly caused by Staphylococci and streptococci. Non-tuberculous Mycobacteria (NTMs), however, have been reported. These infections are difficult to detect using standard gram staining, and may be resistant to most antibacterial drugs.
